Online Safety

Keeping Your Child Safe Online

Glasllwch Primary School is committed to promoting the safe and responsible use of technology, including mobiles, tablets, computers and the internet. Through lessons provided at school, assemblies, PCO visits, e-Safety and Jigsaw lessons, we do our best to provide children with the awareness and knowledge they need in order to recognise and avoid dangerous, destructive, or unlawful behaviour and to respond appropriately. However, it is only through a collaborative effort between parents and school that we will succeed in creating responsible and safe cyber citizens.

E-Safety and safe use of the internet are vitally important in our increasingly technologically advanced society. Please ensure that your child is a responsible computer user and is aware of potential safety issues when using the internet. Should you decide to allow your child to have an online profile we strongly advise you:

● Are fully aware of the functions and features the app/website/game has to offer.

● Check their profile is set to private and that only their friends can see information they post and contact them.

● Monitor your child’s use and talk to them about safe and appropriate online behaviour such as not sharing personal information and not posting or messaging offensive /inappropriate messages or photos.

● Monitor your child’s use of language and how they communicate to other people, ensuring profanity is discouraged.

● Have a look at advice for parents on the specific social media sites.

● Set up your own profiles so you understand how the site works and ask them to have you as their friend on their profile so you know what they are posting online.

● Make sure your son/daughter understands the following rules:

1.   Always keep your profile private.

2.   Never accept a friend you do not know in real life.

3.   Never post anything which could reveal your identity including photographs wearing school uniform where possible.

4.   Never post anything you wouldn’t want your parents or teachers to see.

5.   Never agree to meet somebody you only know online without telling a trusted adult.

6.   Always tell someone if you feel threatened or someone upsets you.

E-Safety Information

We have compiled a range of useful e-Safety information and resources, suitable for parents, from Hwb and nationalonlinesafety.co.uk. Please use the following link to access these. We hope you find them useful to support your child’s safe use of technology.

E-Safety Resources

We recommend that all parents visit the CEOP Think U Know website for more information about keeping your child safe online: www.thinkuknow.co.uk

E-Safety Workshop

We invite all parents to attend our annual E-Safety Workshop when our school’s PCO will run the meeting to talk about how we can take steps to keep our children safe.

Smart Watches and Mobile Phones

All pupils are prohibited from wearing Smart Watches to school which allow them to receive messages, take photos, record or take videos.

Only Year 6 children are allowed to bring their mobile phones to school for the safety of children who walk to and from school. As soon as children enter the school grounds, mobiles must be switched off and kept in their bags for the duration of the day.

E-Safety Policy

Our E-Safety Policy can be found within our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy in our Online Office.

As a school we are committed to keeping our children safe online. We hope this information will support parents and carers with cyber-safety at home.
