Blwyddyn 5

Welcome to Year Five!

Our class project for this term is Cynefin

During our study of Cynefin our pupils will be learning about the local area with a focus on the Gwent Levels. Year 5 will work to develop their knowledge of this vital resource and how we, as humans, use it and rely on it.

During our project the children will be given the opportunity to choose what they would like to learn and how they would like to develop their project. We will share some of the exciting things we learn with you as our project develops through regular class updates (see below). Throughout our project the children will be developing as:

  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
  • ambitious capable learners.

If you would like to get involved in our project and have expertise in any aspect of our project that you would like to bring into school, please contact the school office.

Class Updates

We’re going to be busy this term! You can follow some of our progress on the Glasllwch Twitter page: @GlasllwchP
In addition, please see your child’s individual link to their Seesaw page. This can be found in the back of their reading diaries/homework books!

Class Information

The following information about Year Five may be helpful.  Any unexpected changes or updates to the following information will be communicated through Seesaw or Twitter.

Reading

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s reading. The key to success in reading is to read as often as possible and it is so important that your child reads at home as well as in school.

In Year Five the children will be taking part in weekly guided reading followed by activities which will allow the children to gain a deeper understanding of what they have read.  Our class book this term is Cogheart by Peter Bunzl.

The Year Five library is stocked with lots of reading materials, but if your child would like to bring in a book or magazine from home to read during these sessions they are more than welcome to! We encourage children to read what they enjoy!

Spelling

Spellings will be sent out on a Friday ready for testing the following Friday. In some cases, spellings may be targeted to groups or individuals, depending on what we feel is the most beneficial. Accurate spelling is important for children’s writing development and practising spellings at home makes a big difference to children’s writing within the classroom! Spellings will be sent home via Seesaw and will also be on spelling shed.

Numeracy

We are determined to be times table experts in Year Five!  As with reading, it is really important to rehearse these at home as well.

We will begin working on fast recall of all times tables up to the tens.

This term we will be focusing on targeting the areas that we feel the children need support in. This information will be gathered from the test papers.

P.E.

P.E. lessons are on a Monday morning and a Thursday morning. In our games sessions we will be focusing on Hockey and for P.E the children will be focusing will be starting with Circuit Training.

Please ensure that the children come to school in appropriate PE kit in on these days, in particular a warm kit for games outside during the winter months. The children will be reminded of the school health and safety policy of no jewelry being worn during these lessons. If your child is unable to take out their earrings, please provide plasters.

Home Learning

Each week your child will be assigned Home Learning activities. These include:

  • ‘Daily Jobs’. These are literacy and numeracy activities which will include reading, practising spellings and number work.
  • A weekly ‘Must Do’ job. These activities will help reinforce class learning, be linked to your child’s curriculum project, or will help to develop life-skills and promote well-being.

Home learning tasks will be shared with your child via Seesaw on a Friday and should be completed and returned to your child’s class teacher by Thursday the following week. Please submit home learning by the due date, so that staff are able to view and feedback on home learning. Children can access their Seesaw account using their unique QR code stuck in the front of their home learning books.

Your child may use their home learning book to complete tasks, but some tasks can be completed directly on Seesaw (N-Y6) and Google Classroom (Y3-Y6), or can be presented in whichever manner they prefer.

When home learning tasks require your child to complete them using Google programmes, such as: Google Classroom, Google Docs and Google Slides, your child must use their HWB log in to access these programmes.

Whilst some activities can be completed directly on these platforms, you can also take photos or videos to evidence your child’s learning and upload these to Seesaw.

Work completed in home learning books must be brought into school, but any Seesaw/Google Classroom activities can be submitted digitally.
