Welcome to Year 5!
Welcome to the Year five Homepage! Below you will find information on the Year five curriculum, fun games to strengthen understanding and updates relating to Year five
Our projects for the summer term will be split in two. For the first half-term we will continue to focus on our topic ‘Children of the Revolution’ before moving in the second half-term to our topic ‘H2wOah’.
Literacy, Language and Communication
The book we will be focusing on this half term is ‘Candle Man’. We will cover this book through a series of fun and engaging activities in partnership with our water project. The children read in weekly guided reading sessions and it is recommended that children read for a minimum of 10 minutes each night at home. The children regularly practise their comprehension skills within lessons and to further enhance these skills, comprehension tasks will be set as homework.
Mathematics and Numeracy
This term we will be focusing on applying our mathematical skills across a variety of contexts whilst perfecting our understanding of reasoning problems. They will apply their mathematical knowledge to understand fractions, decimals and percentages, understand and calculate different ratios. They will also look at negative numbers in the context of temperature. We will continue our work using the ‘solving steps’ to perfect our understanding of reasoning problems and how best to tackle them.In the summer term, the focus for the children’s maths will be on application, particularly to project-based activities, such as designing a pier for Cardiff Bay by using budgeting, measuring and number skills.
Science and Technology
In Science and Technology the children will be focusing on the human body and how it changes. They will be investigating the human skeleton including bones, muscles and organs. They will complete investigations comparing jumping height and comparing bones.

In the second half-term, our science will switch to a focus on water, where we will explore the water cycle, animal adaptions and food webs and chains alongside other areas.
From the second half of summer term, we will be working on the project ‘H2wOah’. As part of this project, we will be gathering curriculum ideas from the children and using these to inform planning for the summer term, so this area will be updated following such activities. Some of our activities will be linked to designing a pier for Cardiff Bay.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned the following Thursday. As well as daily reading and spelling practice at home there will usually be a piece of Literacy, Numeracy, Science or Project work to be completed.
P.E. will take place on a Monday (indoor) and a Tuesday (outdoor). We are very fortunate to be working with Newport County football club who will be running sessions with the children on a fortnightly basis.
