Blwyddyn 1

Welcome to Year One

Our class project for this half term is ‘Prehistoric Planet’

This term we will be learning all about the prehistoric world! We will be finding out about dinosaurs and the stone-age!  We are currently in the process of organising our school trip; we are hoping to be going to Wookey Hole!

During our project the children will be given the opportunity to choose what they would like to learn and how they would like to develop their project. We will share some of the exciting things we learn with you as our project develops through regular class updates (see below).

Throughout our project the children will be developing as:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

If you would like to get involved in our project and have expertise in any aspect of our project that you would like to bring into school, please contact the school office.

Class Updates

We’re going to be busy this term! You can follow some of our progress on the Glasllwch Twitter page: @GlasllwchP
In addition, please see your child’s individual link to their Seesaw page. The codes for Seesaw have been sent home to each parent. If you need another code, please pop in and see me at any time!

Class Information

The following information about Year One may be helpful.  Any unexpected changes or updates to the following information will be communicated through Seesaw or Twitter.

Reading

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s reading. The key to success in reading is to read as often as possible and it is so important that your child reads at home as well as in school.

In Year One, the children will read twice a week. Please bring your child’s reading folder into school everyday as the days your child reads will vary.

The Year One library is stocked with lots of reading materials but if your child would like to bring in a book or magazine from home to read as well, they are more than welcome to! We encourage children to read what they enjoy!

Numeracy

This half term, we will be developing a range of mathematical skills with a focus on place value within 20, including: counting, ordering and comparing numbers, adding and taking away 1, before moving onto place value within 50, then measure.

P.E.

PE will take place EVERY WEDNESDAY. Please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school every Wednesday. The children will be reminded of the school health and safety policy of no jewellery being worn during these lessons. If your child is unable to take out their earrings, please provide plasters in their  bag. This term, we will be focusing on dance and movement.

Home Learning

Each week your child will be assigned Home Learning activities. These include:

  • ‘Daily Jobs’. These are literacy and numeracy activities which will include reading, practising spellings and number work.
  • A weekly ‘Must Do’ job. These activities will help reinforce class learning, be linked to your child’s curriculum project, or will help to develop life-skills and promote well-being.

Home learning tasks will be shared with your child via Seesaw on a Friday and should be completed and returned to your child’s class teacher by Thursday the following week. Please submit home learning by the due date, so that staff are able to view and feedback on home learning. Children can access their Seesaw account using their unique QR code stuck in the front of their home learning books.

Your child may use their home learning book to complete tasks, but some tasks can be completed directly on Seesaw (N-Y6) and Google Classroom (Y3-Y6), or can be presented in whichever manner they prefer.

When home learning tasks require your child to complete them using Google programmes, such as: Google Classroom, Google Docs and Google Slides, your child must use their HWB log in to access these programmes.

Whilst some activities can be completed directly on these platforms, you can also take photos or videos to evidence your child’s learning and upload these to Seesaw.

Work completed in home learning books must be brought into school, but any Seesaw/Google Classroom activities can be submitted digitally.
