June 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Annwyl Rhieni,

Pupil Participation Learning Network

On Wednesday 22nd June, Super Ambassadors from Glasllwch Primary School took part in a Pupil Participation Network Meeting at St. Julian’s Primary School. We have been involved in this celebration event over a number of years, with many of our Pupil Groups attending to share their research projects and achievements.

This year Conor and Freya presented to schools from across Newport about their role as Super Ambassadors within school. They demonstrated excellent presentation skills; speaking with confidence and enthusiasm. Whilst we were there, the children also listened to Pupil Participation presentations made by children from a number of other Newport Schools. They enjoyed taking part and came away from the event with some great ideas!

Visitors at the event included Alyson Marchant-Hall (Education Achievement Service) and Lisanne Saladino (Participation Officer for Newport). They were very impressed by the children’s presentations. We are very proud of all the children’s achievements – well done everyone! Thank you St. Julian’s Primary School for hosting the event – we had a fantastic afternoon!

Sport

On Wednesday 8th June, the boys’ cricket teams took part in the Newport Schools’ Kwik Cricket Tournament.

All 16 boys that participated had a great day.

On Thursday 23rd June the girls’ tennis team played in the South Wales Final of the mini green tennis tournament at David Lloyds. They played really well, reaching the final and narrowly losing out to Howells School. Well done girls!

Unfortunately the girls’ Kwik Cricket Tournament and the Athletics Festival had to be cancelled due to the wet weather.

A big thank you to all the staff who organised these events and the parents who have helped with transport.

Year 5 visit to Duffryn High School

Yesterday, the Year 5 children took part in a transition day at Duffryn High School.  During the day they participated in art, music, P4C and History workshops. They also practised singing a selection of songs with all the other Year 5 children from the Duffryn cluster, culminating in a concert for parents at the end of the day. The children had a super day and the concert was fab! Well done everyone!

Multicultural Week

This week has been multi-cultural week in school.  Each class has been learning about a different country; the children have had opportunities to develop their awareness of the different cultures and religions within our society. Throughout the week the children will be sharing what they have learnt with each other.

PTA Summer Fete

We are looking forward to our school fete on Friday 1st July. School will be closing early, at 3pm for Foundation Phase and Juniors. All children must be picked up from school at this time. The fete will be officially open to the public at 3.10 pm.  Any donations of chocolate, cakes and plants will be hugely appreciated on the day. Also, please return your child’s plastic cup full of sweets! The PTA have worked really hard and have some fantastic raffle prizes so please sell as many tickets as you can. Thank you for supporting us in this!

The parents’ football match that was due to take place at the Hoe-Down Family Disco will now take place at the Summer Fete – kick off will be 4pm! Everyone is welcome!

PTA Hoe-Down Family Disco

The PTA Hoe-Down Family Disco that was scheduled for Friday 17th June, will be rescheduled for September 2016. Unfortunately it was cancelled due to bad weather.

Hot Weather Reminder (if we get any!)

During the warmer weather we encourage the children to wear hats on the yard at playtimes and to have sun cream on when they come to school. We discourage the children from bringing sun cream to school to apply themselves, for obvious reasons! Also please make sure the children bring water to drink to school in a plastic sports bottle.

SuperStars

SuperStars will be running FUN Multi Sports Holiday Courses at the School over the Summer Holidays for 2 weeks (25th – 29th July & 1st – 5th Aug). The course is suitable for all children aged 4-11 and runs from 8.45-15.30 daily (Mini Stars – 4 year olds finish at 13:00, SuperStars – aged 5+ finish at 15:30). For more information and to book please get in touch with SuperStars directly on 0845 241 3682 or at https://bookings.super-stars.org.uk/

Dinner Money

Please make sure that dinner money is sent into school on a Monday morning, to place orders for the following week. Chartwells collect the dinner money and orders from us at the beginning of the week – no further orders can be placed after the orders have been collected. Thank you!

Timber Trail

Once again – in the interest of safety, children are not allowed to use the timber trail or run up and down the grass bank before and after school.  Your support in encouraging your child to remain on the playground at these times is much appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for your continued support. The partnership that we have enables us to continue to ‘reach for the stars’ and to build on our success. As an ‘Excellent School’ we are always evaluating our policies, procedures and practices and striving to be a ‘centre of excellence’. We really are very proud of our school and of all our children.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. C. Jackson

Head Teacher

Reminder: Last day of the summer term is Wednesday 20th July.
