RSE Curriculum

Our Whole-School Approach to RSE

As a school, we believe that to be able to learn and reach their full potential, children need to be happy, confident, understand themselves, understand their feelings and know how to get on with each other and make friends. In order for children to develop as health and confident individuals, we have developed a whole-school approach to RSE.

Our whole-school approach to RSE combines planned opportunities to develop children’s understanding of relationships and sexuality through curriculum projects, alongside using Jigsaw and No Outsiders.

Jigsaw

Children take part in weekly sessions, with a focus each half-term on one of the following six themes:

  • Being Me in My World

  • Celebrating Differences

  • Dreams and Goals

  • Healthy Me

  • Relationships

  • Changing Me

These carefully considered and crafted, age-appropriate sessions lead to opportunities for deeper understanding of self and others, high-quality discussions and continual reflection on personal well-being and support networks at school, home and the wider community. Each class has its own cuddly puzzle piece friend who helps to guide their class through the various sessions and can be used by children as a comfort and support when sharing their own thoughts, feelings and ideas.

No Outsiders

At Glasllwch Primary we believe that there are no outsiders because everyone is welcome; every child needs to be taught that they belong. We use the No Outsiders scheme in school to teach children about difference and equality in a progressive and age appropriate way.

As they move through school, No Outsiders provides opportunities for children to explore their differences so that they feel comfortable in their own skin. Children should know who they are and feel proud to be who they are, and also know that they are accepted without judgement. No child should feel that they have to change who they are in order to fit in.

As they progress, No Outsiders gives children the language to challenge prejudice and show acceptance. Not only will they feel safe knowing they belong, they can also show others that they too are safe.

Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is a mandatory aspect of the curriculum for all schools in Wales. At Glasllwch, RSE has been well embedded within our curriculum for many years.
