School News - Friday 23rd October ‘26

We have reached the end of a very busy half term. The children have been immersed in our Enquiry Curriculum, developing their sense of belonging through their engagement in a variety of authentic, cross-curricular learning opportunities. It has been wonderful to see the children settle into their new year groups, developing confidence and enthusiasm for learning. We have also been pleased to see so many children showing kindness and respect towards others –da iawn pawb!
Wastesavers Trip
This week, linked to their enquiry question ‘How will sustainability affect the future of Casnewydd?’, Year 4 visited Wastesavers to find out about how Newport recycle. They learnt about the importance of reducing, reducing and recycling. They found out how glass, plastic, metal, food and paper can be used. Bendigedig!
Head Over Heels
This week, our Nursery children had a fantastic time at Head Over Heels Gymnastics at Trinity Church. They enjoyed playing games and moving to music, developing their balance and co-ordination. They also had the opportunity to use the apparatus to build their gymnastics skills. Everyone had a brilliant time! Diolch Head Over Heels!
Crucial Criw
On Thursday, Year 6 took a trip to Raglan Barracks in Newport to attend a Crucial Crew session. This is an annual event which provides important safety information for Year 6 children in Newport. Throughout the morning, the children visited eight different stations where they had the opportunity to learn more about: beach safety, safety around trains and train tracks, CPR, gas and electricity dangers, the fire service and also who to turn to if they witness a crime or are worried about illegal activities or behaviours. The children learned a lot of potentially lifesaving information and were commended by all of the Crucial Crew staff on their exceptional behaviour. Da iawn Year 6!
Ballet Cymru
This week the children Year 3 to Year 6 spent a day each engaging in dance workshops with Ballet Cymru. During their workshops the children spent a full day with professional dancers, creating, choreographing and rehearsing their dance pieces. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, building on the skills they developed last year. The children will continue to work with Ballet Cymru in the coming weeks and will perform their creations during our Christmas performances. Da iawn pawb!
To help fund this opportunity, we kindly ask for a voluntary donation of £5 per child, payable via ParentPay. Thank you for your support.
PTA Shelter Success!
We are delighted to share that, weather permitting, a new playground shelter will be installed during the half-term break. This project has been funded by our AMAZING PTA following their continued hard work and commitment to raising funds for the school. We would like to thank all parents and carers who support the PTA by attending events, volunteering their time, and helping in any way they can. The shelter will provide a practical outdoor space for learning activities, community use, and protection from the elements, helping us make the most of our outdoor environment throughout the year. Diolch yn fawr iawn!
A massive thank you to Kingsley Building Group for carrying out the build of the shelter, and also for agreeing to support us with clearing away the old timber trail remains so that we can further develop new areas for play. Diolch!

Year 4 Dragons Community Rugby
This half term, Year 4 have been enjoying their rugby sessions with the Dragons community rugby coach - the children are having a fantastic time learning new skills and developing team work. Diolch Dan!
Clwb Coedwig a Hwyl
After half term we are excited to confirm the launch of our after school provision Clwb Coedwig a Hwyl (Forest and Fun). This club will be provided by Pitter Patter Play, and will offer a unique opportunity to the pupils of Glasllwch to access after school provision which offers a rich variety of outdoor and indoor experiences.
As a school we are committed to developing our school grounds, including the forest area. We will continue to work alongside Clwb Coedwig a Hwyl to further improve our outdoor spaces to benefit our pupils, families and wider Glasllwch community.
School Dinners
We are waiting for Chartwells and ParentPay to confirm our Autumn/Winter menus. Please note that we will text out to inform you when the menus become live for booking on ParentPay.
As always, the menu for the first day back will be different to that stated; this is due to deliveries and stock availability. The menu for Tuesday 3rd November will be: Pork/Veggie Sausages and Mash with Gravy or Jacket Potato and Beans. We will have no other options available, therefore please send in a packed lunch if your child does not like the options. Thanks!
THRIVE Wellbeing Assessments
Our children from Reception to Year 6 will be completing their wellbeing THRIVE assessments when we return to school; these are based on their own thoughts and feelings towards different aspects of school life. This information is personal and child-led and ensures that we can appropriately support individuals and helps us see what is working well.
Learner Progression
Thank you to all parents who have attended parental consultations this week – nearly 100% attendance! If you haven't had an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher, please contact school to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Please refer to our Learner Progression Model (below) which illustrates how we work in partnership with parents/carers, throughout the academic year, to support each child's progress in learning. It is vital that we work together, with the children, to identify the progress they are making, their general well-being in school, their future learning needs and how these can be supported at home.

Senedd Glasllwch
Pupil participation and our pupil groups have always been a huge part of life at Glasllwch. The importance we place on pupil voice is clear from our vision statement, '...where the natural curiosity and voice of each individual is valued, nurtured and encouraged to flourish...'
Our pupil groups represent their peers across school, ensuring they have a say in our learning environment, aspects of teaching and learning, resources and many aspects of our wider curriculum. Our groups and their focus areas are as follows:
Community Committee - community links, charity fundraising
Eco Champions - environment, travel, recycling
Well - being Ambassadors - nutrition, UNCRC, health and fitness
Digital Leaders - ICT, Digital Competency
Criw Cymraeg - Welsh language, culture and heritage
Resolution Role Models - mediation, behaviour, positive play
Learning Squad - learning, curriculum, research and enquiry
Each pupil group meet on a regular basis and contribute to a Senedd Glasllwch action plan which feeds into our whole School Development Plan.
Two children from each of these groups represent their group in Senedd Glasllwch. Senedd Glasllwch meet with Mrs Lane and Mrs Munslow every half term to: discuss what they have been working on; request funding for specific projects; bring to the forefront issues or concerns they may have.
Reading
The partnership between home and school is invaluable, and we greatly appreciate the way families encourage and support reading outside of school. Together, we can help every child become a confident, enthusiastic reader and foster a lifelong love of learning. Please read our Reading Newsletter.

Home / School Agreement
When children join Glasllwch we ask all parents and children to join us and sign up to our Home / School Agreement – this can be accessed through our Online Office ‘Policies’ webpage. We pride ourselves on having high academic achievement as well as ensuring high levels of wellbeing and high standards of behaviour, attendance and teaching and learning. The partnership we have with parents is an integral part of our success and vital if pupils are to flourish and reach their full potential.
Class specific home learning is shared each week, via our learning platforms, to consolidate learning that has taken place in school. We ask that you read with your child every day at home and support them in practising spellings and tables each day. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Safeguarding
The safety and protection of children is of paramount importance to everyone associated with our school. At Glasllwch Primary School we have in place robust procedures to ensure that we meet our responsibilities for safeguarding children from abuse.
As part of our curriculum children have opportunities to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse. Children know that they can approach any of the adults in our school if they are worried about anything at all. All staff and governors have annual update safeguarding training.
The School Designated Person (DSP) responsible for safeguarding is Mrs J Munslow
The School Deputy Designated Person (DDSP) responsible for safeguarding is Mrs R Cornelius-Zahr
Our School Governor responsible for safeguarding is Mr Robert Cornelius
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy can be found within the Policies section of our school website Online Office.
School Applications
Year 7 Secondary School Applications
A letter has been emailed to all current Year 6 Parents/Guardians with information on how to apply for a place at Secondary School for your child. Applications for places are open from 18th September to 31st October 2026. Places allocated will be issued on 1st March 2027. Please make sure you put down more than one school choice, as if there is no availability or you do not meet the criteria for one school, you will not be offered another school. This causes unnecessary distress to your child and yourselves.
Please apply within the application window to - www.newport.gov.uk/schooladmissions
Reception - Primary School Applications
Applications for Reception places starting September 2026 open on 13th November 2026 and close on 15th January 2027. It is vital that you apply between these dates. Apply on-line via www.newport.gov.uk/schooladmissions. Decisions are issued on 16th April 2027.
Should you wish to look around Glasllwch School before making your application we have an Open Evening for prospective parents/carers to look around on Thursday 19th November at 4:00pm. To attend you would need to book a place - please phone the school office: 01633 266398.
Attendance
Our whole school attendance figure so far this year is 96.3%! This is above our target of 96% - fantastic!
Well done to Year 5 for having the highest attendance so far this academic year – 97.9% wow!
Good attendance at school is vital if your child is to achieve their full potential. We monitor individual pupil attendance on a regular basis and will contact you if your child’s attendance dips below our target of 96%.
All holidays should be taken during the school holidays and not in term time. Any planned absence from school must be requested in writing. Such requests will be considered on an individual basis.
It is vital that all children are in school and ready to learn by 9am. The school doors are open from 8.50am for the children to filter into classrooms. The teachers start lessons promptly, as soon as the register has been called. Children arriving late are missing out on vital learning opportunities. Once again thank you for your continued support.
Pantomime Reminder
A polite reminder that Mrs Griffiths is finalising arrangements for our whole school pantomime trip to the Riverfront Theatre on 4th December. If your child would like to go on the pantomime trip, please book via Parent Pay by the end of today. We don’t want anyone to miss out on a ticket. If your child will NOT be attending for any reasons, please email the office as soon as possible so we can remove their name from our lists.
Welsh Phrase of the Week
‘Pryd mae dy ben-blwydd?’ – ‘When is your birthday?’

Diary dates for the week ahead can also be found on our home page. Please visit our school calendar to access diary dates for the year ahead. We will continue to add dates to the calendar as we move through the school year
Have a restful and relaxing half-term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday 3rd November.
