Newport Grand Council Event
On Monday, two of our Senedd members, Idris and Everly, attended Newport’s Grand Council Event at Gaer Primary School. During the day they met with children from schools across Newport City to share ideas. They engaged with Newport live, and took part in Forest School and Wilderness activities. As always, the children represented Glasllwch brilliantly – da iawn!
Gwent Music Strings Project
Our talented Year 1 children wowed their families with a wonderful strings performance, showcasing everything they’ve learned during their sessions with Gwent Music. After weeks of practising rhythm, technique, and teamwork, the children confidently played a selection of pieces, impressing everyone with their focus and musical progress. A big thank you to the Gwent Music team for their fantastic teaching and to all the parents/carers who came along to watch the performance! Diolch!
Reception 2026 Welcome Meeting
On Monday we held a Welcome Meeting for the parents/carers of children who will be joining us in Reception in September. Parents had a chance to meet Mrs Glencross, who will be their teacher next year, and to find out about transition arrangements. We also shared our school vision and values and gave an overview of the curriculum. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend.
Hot Weather
As always, we are hugely grateful to our families, who have adapted to distance learning, despite the hot weather. We recognise the inconvenience caused by the school closure days, and thank you for your support and co-operation under challenging circumstances.
Unfortunately, due to the heatwave we have experienced this week, we have had to rearrange or cancel a number of events which were planned for this week.
These included the annual Pupil Participation Learning Network (PPLN) with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales and a number of other Newport schools who were due to attend. This was incredibly disappointing for everyone involved as it is one of the highlights of our academic year. A huge thank you to Mrs Lane for organising the event and for her dedication in facilitating a digital alternative which will allow the children to share their pupil-led projects, all be it virtually.
This week we have also been forced to postpone a number of trips, including the Nursery/Reception visit to Mountain View Ranch, and the Y3 visit to Newport Wetlands. A massive thank you to Mrs Griffiths who has worked hard to rearrange the visits, ensuring the children don’t miss out on these opportunities. We do hope parent helpers will be able to join us on the revised dates – we apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continued support.
The John Frost School were also forced to cancel the Y5 Performing Arts Concert which was due to take place last night. Again, this is disappointing after the commitment shown by the Expressive Arts department from The John Frost School who have worked with all the cluster schools to prepare for what is always a super event. Our Year 5 children have been rehearsing hard and sound amazing so we hope they will be able to perform at the Summer Fete next week.
Attendance
A HUGE well done to Year 3 for achieving the highest attendance so far this term (95.4%) and Year 3 & 5 for this academic year so far! (95.5%)
Our whole school attendance is currently 94.1%, which is a little from our target of 96% for this year - we are so close but need your support to achieve this!
Parking
Please, please can we remind parents of the importance of not double parking, parking on double yellow lines or parking dangerously to drop children off or pick them up. We continue to have a significant number of complaints from parents and local residents, who are HUGELY concerned about the health and safety of the children whilst crossing the roads. This really is a very serious issue. All vehicles parked dangerously or blocking driveways will be reported to Traffic Enforcement.
Upcoming Dates
Diary dates for the week ahead can be found on our home page. Please visit our school calendar to access dates for the remainder of the summer term.
Enjoy a relaxing, restful and hopefully cooler weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs J. Munslow
