School News Friday 2nd October ‘26

We have had an exciting and busy week in school! These are some of the highlights:
Harvest Festival
This week, we held our whole-school Harvest Festival. Our Year 6 children led the celebrations, sharing important messages about how food is produced around the world and how we can help provide for others who may be less fortunate than ourselves. All the children enjoyed singing Harvest songs and listening to our visiting speakers. A BIG thank you to Mr and Mrs Bafico from Trinity Church, and to Adrian and Julie from the Risca Foodbank.
Also, a HUGE thank you for the generous produce donations sent into school. The food has been given to the Risca Foodbank—a charity that provides emergency food and support to local people experiencing poverty. They have seen an increase in demand due to the cost-of-living crisis, so your donations will help many people in need. Thank you, everyone!
Year 6 Visit to the Civic Centre
On Tuesday, Year 6 walked to Newport Civic Centre to learn more about Newport City Council and their role in our city. As part of their enquiry "How can we speak up about things that matter to us?" Year 6 have begun by identifying our elected officials who can speak up on behalf of us, including local councillors. During the visit, Year 6 got to sit in the Council Chambers, where big decisions about our city are made, and got to visit the Mayor's Parlour where they were able to see all the gifts that have been given by visitors to our city. They were brilliantly behaved throughout. Da iawn Year 6!
Bullies Out – Playground Pals
Today our Year 5 Resolution Role Models took part in a Bullies Out workshop to develop their peer-mediation skills. The children who took part will become our Playground Pals; they will be out on the yard at playtimes supporting the younger children with positive play and resolution of minor disputes. Da iawn pawb!
Poetry in the Community
This week, to celebrate National Poetry Day, children from across the school wrote a variety of poems, which will be delivered to local residents by our Year 6 class. We hope the local community will enjoy receiving the poems. Da iawn pawb!
Reading News!
The partnership between home and school is invaluable, and we greatly appreciate the way families encourage and support reading outside of school. Together, we can help every child become a confident, enthusiastic reader and foster a lifelong love of learning. Please read our Reading Newsletter.
Home Learning
We encourage all children to participate in Home Learning opportunities. The nature of the activities will vary as they move through the school. Each week children will be set Home Learning activities, which will include:
‘Daily Jobs’. These are short literacy and numeracy activities which will include reading, practising spellings and number bonds/times tables.
A weekly ‘Must Do’ activity. These activities will help reinforce class learning, be linked to your child’s curriculum project, or will help to develop life-skills and promote well-being.
If you have any questions or queries regarding Home Learning, please do contact your child’s teacher.
PTA Annual General Meeting
On Tuesday, we held our PTA AGM. During the meeting, we reflected on the successes of last year—lots of fantastic events that raised over £9,000! This money supported the purchase of the playground shelter, classroom resources, coding equipment, block play, our T2P messaging service, Year 6 bowling, and much more.
This academic year, the PTA has agreed to support enhancements to outdoor learning by funding an additional sheltered area – diolch yn fawr!
Thank you so much to everyone involved—we couldn’t do it without you!
At the AGM, we also finalised the new committee member roles for 2026/27. We’re pleased to confirm the following positions:
Chair: Mandy Burgess
Vice Chair: Lindsey Dacey
Secretary: Bethan Turner
Treasurer: Emily Davies
A huge thank you to our committee members for taking on these important roles, and to everyone who attended the meeting. We look forward to an exciting year ahead! Also, a BIG thank you to Cristyn Edwards who has done a superb job as Treasurer – thank you for all your time and effort over a number of years!
Please visit our PTA webpage to find out how you can support Glasllwch PTA.
