School News - Friday 7th November 2025

7 Nov 2025

We are now into the second half of what is always a very busy term in school. You will be aware of school being full of music, song, dance and verse as we prepare for our Christmas performances. It is the time of year when our curriculum planning allows us to focus on drama, singing, music, dance, speaking and listening, and performance. These Literacy and Expressive Arts activities give children an opportunity to excel, grow in confidence and shine in a variety of ways.

In order for us to maintain our high academic standards and to ensure that all children reach their full potential, we will still be covering all aspects of the curriculum. Our curriculum plans are designed to ensure maximum coverage and progression over the year, taking annual events into consideration.

Ballet Cymru

This week the children in Year 3 to Year 6 began engaging in a series of five dance sessions with Ballet Cymru. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have begun choreographing dances which they will perform during our junior Christmas Performances. Da iawn pawb!

To help fund this opportunity, we kindly ask for a voluntary donation of £5 per child, payable via ParentPay. Thank you for your support.

Welcome Miss Hughes

This week we have welcomed Miss Hughes to our school community. Miss Hughes has taken on the role of Year 1 class teacher. Miss Hughes is a Newly Qualified Teacher who brings fresh ideas, great enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and learning. Welcome to the team Miss Hughes!

Diolch Mr Rapley

Yesterday Year 4 were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Rapley as part of their class project about our sustainable city. Mr Rapley spoke to the children about his role costing and project managing in the construction industry. The children learned about sustainability within the construction industry, specifically the work Mr Rapley and his company are doing in Newport and Cardiff. Diolch Mr Rapley!

PTA Success

Glasllwch has an excellent Parent Teacher Association (PTA) who work very hard to organise events to raise money for our children. Their support is hugely appreciated and helps raise funds for much needed resources within school.

A HUGE thank you to the PTA who have had a really successful academic year so far with events, including: Spooky Discos, after school sales, Break the Rules Day and Spooky Trails. Together these events have raised over £1500 – an incredible achievement in the first half-term!  Thank you to the PTA for their commitment in organising these events and to all those who have got involved and supported the events! It has been lovely to see our school community pulling together to make these events a success – diolch pawb!

Also, a MASSIVE thank you to the children in Year 5 who used their entrepreneurial skills to raise £135 over the half term break selling spooky goodies at the Ridgeway Café. Da iawn girls – we are SO proud of you! Diolch!

PTA Diary Dates:

  • PTA PJ Day – Friday 21st November

  • Christmas Wreath Making – Friday 28th December

  • Christmas Fete – Thursday 11th December, 3:15pm

All parents are automatically members of the P.T.A. We really do need as many people as possible to get involved in PTA events which will continue to raise money to buy essential resources and equipment. We are getting closer to our £7000 target, which we hope will enable us to install a new shelter on the playground. We can do it!

Please visit our PTA web-page on the Glasllwch Primary School website for more information about our PTA.

Firework Safety

This week, during our whole school assembly, we reminded the children to be careful when they are out enjoying firework displays; if they find a firework they mustn’t touch it and should tell an adult.

Community Forum

On Monday 17th November 3-4pm, we will be hosting our first Community Forum session of this academic year. We are really excited to welcome back parents, carers and community members into school to work collaboratively with staff. We hope that the Community Forum will continue to be a partnership between the community and school; a valuable platform to share ideas, views and make suggestions for improvement. The Community Forum are keen to welcome new members so if you would like to come along please contact Mrs Lane via the school email address: glasllwch.primary@newportschools.wales  A big thank you to Mrs Zahr and Mrs Lane for their ongoing commitment to the success of the Community Forum.

Children in Need

Friday 14th November we will be taking part in BBC Children in Need Day – all children are welcome to wear something spotty or Pudsey. Our Community Committee have organised events for all children to take part throughout the week – Strictly 25 Step Dance Challenge.  A link to a ParentPay BBC Children in Need donation page will be sent out early next week, with the funds donated going direct to the charity. Thank you everyone for supporting this worthwhile cause.
