News Update – 11th October ‘24.

11 Oct 2024
Harvest Festival
Today we held our whole school Harvest Festival. Our Year 6 children led the celebrations, sharing with everyone important messages about how our food is produced around the world and how we can help provide food for others who may be less fortunate than ourselves. All of the children enjoyed singing Harvest songs and listening to our visiting speakers. A BIG thank you to Mr & Mrs Bafico who joined us from Trinity Church.
Also a HUGE thank you for the produce that you sent in to school. The food has been given to The Trussell Trust Food Bank; a charity who provide emergency food and support to local people locked in poverty. They have seen an increase in people accessing the foodbank due to the cost of living crisis so your donations will help many needy people in our area. Thank you everyone!
Newport Grand Council
Today, two representatives from Senedd Glasllwch attended Newport’s Grand Council Meeting at the Riverfront Theatre. Holly and Violet took part in a variety of activities provided by Newport City Council, giving them an opportunity to engage with the work of the council and share their views to influence decisions. They met the Newport City Council Leader and Deputy Leader, as well as pupil council members from across the city. Both children were a credit to the school – da iawn!

Wellbeing Update
The wellbeing of our children and community is at the heart of what we do. This term we will be continuing with our Community Forum which was established last academic year as a result of parental feedback. We hope the Community Forum will continue to grow this year, creating a space for parents/carers and community members to engage with school and influence school life. The next Community Forum will take place on Friday 15th November at 9am in the school hall. If you are able to, please do come along and join us. It would be great to see some new faces.
PTA Update
The PTA are busy organising a number of events for this term:
Spooky Discos – Thursday 17th October, 4:30-5:30pm N-Rec, 5:45-6:45pm Y3-Y6.
Break the Rules Day – Friday 25th October
Christmas Wreath Making – Thursday 5th December 6-8pm
Christmas Fete – Friday 13th December, 3:10pm
Christmas PJ Day – Friday 20th December
Please do come along and get involved. These events provide an opportunity to have fun and meet new people as well as raising important and much needed funds for school. A big thank you to the PTA for their ongoing commitment.
Parent Consultations
A BIG thank you to all those parents/carers who have signed up for a parent consultation the week before half-term. We have had almost all families book already which is fantastic! If you are yet to book, please do so via the link which was emailed out.
Learner Reviews
This term teachers have been meeting with groups of learners to set targets, these may include: personal/social targets, literacy, numeracy and metacognition – learning about how they learn. All children Y1-Y6 have targets; they are regularly referred to throughout each day. Learners self-assess their progress towards their targets and together with teachers and support staff, agree when targets have been met and new targets set. You can view your child’s individual targets through SeeSaw, in the file named ‘Learner Reviews’. Please talk to your children about their targets so you can support them at home in working towards them.
Intervention Programmes
Occasionally your child may receive additional support in Literacy or Numeracy in the form of ‘intervention programmes’. These programmes are to either support your child with a skill or concept that has been taught but they haven’t grasped or to extend their learning further. Whole class literacy and numeracy lessons take place each morning. Intervention programmes are additional sessions which usually take place in the afternoons. They are shorter sessions for between 20 – 30 minutes. Where possible, we try to ensure that intervention programmes are timetabled on a rolling programme so that children do not miss the same afternoon session each week. It may be that your child only needs to participate in a session as a one off, for a particular concept or it may be that they need to participate in the complete programme over a number of weeks. If your child requires regular intervention you will be informed by your class teacher.
