News Update – 4th October ’24

4 Oct 2024
We have had an exciting and busy week in school! These are some of the highlights!
RECEPTION VISIT TO JEWS WOOD
On Wednesday our Reception class went on a walk to Jews Wood. They had a fantastic time engaging in a variety of outdoor learning activities and finding out about their local environment. Diolch all the parents and carers who were able to come and help make the visit a success!
RUGBY SUCCESS
This week our Y5/6 Rugby Team went to Caerleon RFC to play in the Newport Schools Autumn Cup. The children played brilliantly. They played four games – winning 2 and losing 2. They finished 3rd overall, winning the plate! Da iawn pawb!
HOCKEY TOURNAMENT WINNERS
Another sporting success this week! Our Year 6 Hockey Team took part in a Newport Schools Hockey Tournament at Lliswerry Primary School. The children were a credit to the school, winning 6 out 6 matches! They came 1st place overall, winning the tournament! Llongyfarchiadau!
NATIONAL POETRY DAY
This week, to celebrate National Poetry Day, children from across the school have written a variety of poems which were then delivered to our local residents by our Year 6 class. We have been overwhelmed by the kind messages, cards and emails that we have received from the local community. Da iawn pawb!
NUMBER TOTS
As a school we are continuing to improve how we engage with our families and the wider community. We are very excited to be launching our Number Tots workshops for our Nursery learners and their parents/carers. These sessions will be interactive and will provide parents/carers with an opportunity to engage in a variety of maths games and songs with their child which can they be used at home to develop mathematical understanding. We will also be providing a bank of resources to support parents/carers in replicating the activities at home with their child, as well as suggesting activities which use everyday objects from home.
WELSH WATER
On Wednesday we welcomed Welsh Water to school. The children enjoyed a whole school assembly and Y2, Y3, and Y4 took part in Welsh Water workshops. The children learnt about the water cycle and why we must try not to waste water.
BULLIES OUT – PLAYGROUND PALS
Our Year 5 Resolution Role Models took part in a Bullies Out workshop to develop their peer-mediation skills. The children who took part will become our Playground Pals; they will be out on the yard at playtimes supporting the younger children with positive play and resolution of minor disputes.
PTA UPDATE
On Tuesday we held our PTA AGM. We were delighted to have so many people attend and to see lots of new faces!
During the meeting we reflected on the successes of last year – lots of fantastic events which raised an incredible £11,000! This money was used to support the purchase of classroom resources, a bank of new reading books for our younger learners and new ICT equipment for use across the school, developing learners’ digital competency skills! Amazing! Thank you so much to everyone involved!
At the AGM we also finalised the new committee member roles for 2024/25. We are pleased to confirm the following positions:
Co-chairs: Sarah MacCarty & Mandy Burgess
Vice Chair: Sandra Durant
Secretary: Katy Tomkins
Treasurer: Cristyn Edwards
A huge thank you to our committee members for taking on these important roles and also to all those people who attended! We look forward to an exciting year ahead!
