News Update – Friday 16th May ’25

16 May 2025

Y5 Gilwern Residential Visit

This week Year 5 spent two days away at Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre. They participated in a range of exciting activities such as gorge walking, climbing and canoeing. It was fantastic to see the children challenging themselves and being so supportive to one another. The children were impeccably behaved and were an absolute credit to school. Great job Year 5, we are all incredibly proud of you.

A HUGE thank you to Mr Burgess, Miss Summers, Mrs Hall for giving up their time to take the children on the visit and for making it such a positive and memorable experience!

Curriculum Celebrations

This week we have welcomed Year 1 and Year 4 parents/carers to our Curriculum Celebrations. The children in both classes were so excited and thoroughly enjoyed sharing their learning from throughout this year. They spoke with confidence, sang and danced with enthusiasm, and showcased their learning across all areas of the curriculum. These events really were a celebration of the children’s wonderful achievements and the fantastic progress they have made this year! Da iawn!

Swimming Success

Year 3 have finished their three week block of intensive swimming lessons. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have progressed well – developing their swimming skills and water confidence. Da iawn pawb! A HUGE thank you to all the parents who have helped out by attending these sessions. Diolch!

Reminder – Reporting Absences

A polite reminder that all absences must be reported to the school office. If your child is absent please contact Mrs Griffiths via the school email address glasllwch.primary@newportschools.wales or telephone: 01633 266398. Thank you for your co-operation.

PTA Update

Thank you to all those who supported our Silent Disco last Friday night. It really was a great success and everyone had a brilliant time. A MASSIVE thank you to the PTA for their hard work organising the event. The money raised by the PTA supports the purchase of much needed resources and equipment. Thank you!

Next PTA meeting: Tuesday 20th May ’25 at 6pm in school.

Not to be missed PTA Summer Fayre Friday 4th July. This is always a successful event with lots of fun and entertainment. Please do come along and support us!

Reception 2025 Intake Meeting

A meeting for Reception parents for the September 2025 intake has been arranged for Thursday 19th June in the school hall at 4:30pm. PTA pre-loved uniform will be on sale from 4pm.

At the meeting you will be introduced to key members of our staff and have the opportunity to visit the Reception classroom. Dates and times for the new Reception pupils to spend time in the Reception class during the Summer Term will be given out. Information will also be provided about what to expect when your child starts school in September.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Learning Conversations

As we move closer to the end of the summer term, we are looking forward to being able to welcome you into school to hold Learning Conversations with your child.

During these sessions you will be able to spend some time with your child looking at their books and talking with them about some of the activities and experiences they have engaged in during this academic year.  Your child will have the opportunity to share with you the learning they have enjoyed, what they are most proud of and also, for our older learners, how they have developed as a learner since September.

These learning conversations will take place on the following dates/times:

30.7.25 – Rec-Y2 Learning Conversations – from 2pm

1.7.25 – Nursery Learning Conversations – 10:45am/2:30pm

2.7.25 – Y3-Y6 Learning Conversations – from 2pm

More information will follow after half term.

Summer Shade Needed

As a school, with the support of the PTA, we are working towards putting in place permanent shaded areas on the playground and field areas, such as canopies and gazebos.  In the meantime, we want to ensure the children have a shaded space on the playground/field during these warmer months. To help with this, we’re reaching out to ask if anyone is able to loan a marquee for the summer term. A sturdy, weather-resistant marquee would provide much-needed shade for playtimes, outdoor lessons and events. If you have one available or know someone who might be able to help, please get in touch with the school office—we’d be incredibly grateful for your support!

Personalised Assessments

During the Summer Term learners in Y2 – Y6 will be accessing personalised assessments in reading, numeracy and reasoning. The assessments will take place as an ongoing aspect of classroom-based learning and teaching.

These online personalised assessments are designed to support individual learner progression as part of the assessment arrangements that we have developed within school.

The personalised assessments are for formative use, providing teachers with additional information on the reading, numeracy and reasoning skills of the children. Assessment information provided by the personalised assessments can provide teachers, learners and parents/carers with an understanding of strengths and areas for improvement in these skills, thus informing planning for progression.

Assessment information from the personalised assessments will be shared with parents/carers before the end of the summer term via Hwb. Access to this feedback will enable you to support your children with their learning at home.
