News Update – Friday 28th March ’25

28 Mar 2025

Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner

This week we had the privilege of welcoming Jane Mudd, Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner, to Glasllwch. Ms Mudd met with our Resolution Role Models for a Q&A session. The children asked some brilliant questions and learnt a lot about the role of Police and Crime Commissioner. Ms Mudd was really impressed with the children and would like to work with us again to develop a charter for Gwent. Fantastic! A huge thank you to Mr Burgess and Mrs Hall for all their hard work supporting our Resolution Role Models as they develop as ethically informed citizens within our local community.

Newport Schools Football Tournament

On Tuesday, our Y5/6 boys football team took part in the Newport Schools Tournament. It was a busy day with the team coming 3rd out of 25 schools! A super effort! Well done boys! Thanks to parents who supported us with transport and also Mr Burgess for organising our participation at the event.

Newport Schools Netball League

Also, this week, our mixed Y5/6 Netball Team took part in the Netball League at Lliswerry Primary School. The team were amazing and played really well! They scored a total of 33 goals during the tournament! Wow! The team came 5th overall – they won 4 and drew 2. All of the children were impeccably well behaved and showed great sportsmanship. Da iawn pawb! Thank you Mr Price who helped with transport and Mrs McArdell for organising the team to take part in the competition.

School Support Officer Position

As you will know, following my letter earlier this week, we are hoping to appoint a new School Support Officer to join our Glasllwch team. The position is advertised on the Newport City Council Jobs webpage. Please do share this with friends or family who may be interested in applying. Diolch!

Book Fair

This week we have been very excited to have a Scholastic Book Fair in school. It has already proven to be a great success which is fantastic! The Book Fair will be in the school hall during Parental Consultations next week so please do take a look. Books for all ages will be available to look at and purchase for your child to take home.  Payment can be made online via the Scholastics QR code on display at the Book Fair.  Every book purchased will earn money for school to buy books which will enhance our curriculum and library areas. Thank you for your support!

PTA Quiz Night

A massive thank you to all those who joined us for the PTA Quiz last Friday. It was very well attended and everyone had a brilliant time! We are very grateful to the PTA for organising the evening which has raised a fantastic £450 to support the purchase of learning resources for the children. Thank you everyone!

Please do support our school PTA by getting involved in the planning and running of these events. We do need as many people as possible to help out.

  • Smarties Challenge – Friday 4th April

  • Silent Disco – 9th May

  • Break the Rules Day- 23rd May

  • Summer Fayre – 4th July

Next PTA Meeting – Tuesday 29th April 6pm. Please come along! We will need plenty of help to make the Summer Fayre a success!

Parental Consultations

Next week we will be holding parental consultations. These meetings will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s wellbeing and progress in learning with their teacher. If you are unable to attend please contact your child’s teacher via the school office to arrange an alternative appointment. Thank you.

Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

Next week the children will be learning all about the importance of Ramadan and why we celebrate Eid al-Fitr. During this time the children will experience a variety of activities designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Islamic faith. On Friday 4th April we will have a whole school assembly, with Mrs Koreish visiting to talk to the children about Eid. The children will also experience Eid al-Fitr celebrations so are invited to wear their party clothes.

Skating Success

Congratulations to Cara in Year 4 who took part in the GBSA Nationals Springs 2025 Competition last weekend. Cara travelled to Great Yarmouth to take part in this national skating competition, coming 10th overall in her age category. Llongyfarchiadau Cara!

Community Forum

Following our recent survey, we will be trialling a new day and time. Our next session will take place on Monday 7th April 3-4pm, with a creche available for children of those parents/carers attending. The focus of the session will be on Wellbeing and Online Safety, to support us in developing these areas of our school website.

Our Community Forum is a valuable opportunity for parents and carers to share their voice on key areas for school development.  We hugely appreciate parental and carer involvement in these sessions as it genuinely supports us in making decisions.  This year our Community Forum have fed into our ‘Parent and Carer Involvement Policy’, which can be accessed on our school website, and have helped to streamline communication methods, as well as opening up discussion around other areas such as school concerts. If you are able to, please do join us on Monday 7th April! Diolch!

Attendance

A HUGE well done to Year 5 for achieving the highest attendance (97.7%!) during the Spring Term so far and to Year 4 for achieving the highest attendance so far this academic year with 97%, exceeding our 96% target! Amazing!

Reminder – Doors open for children to filter in from 8.50am. It is vital that all children are in school and in classes by 9am so they are ready to learn. Thank you for supporting us in this.
