News Update – Friday 2nd May ’25

2 May 2025

Welcome back to the summer term! It is lovely to see the children back in school and ready to learn – we are all looking forward to another busy and exciting term!

Enquiry Curriculum

This term we are excited to be launching our new ‘Enquiry Curriculum’. As a result of engaging with research and reflecting on current practice we have collaborated to develop a purpose-led, process-orientated approach to learning. Building on our existing project approach, which is rooted in authentic and relevant contexts, our enquiry curriculum will enable the children to develop integral skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation. We look forward to sharing our curriculum projects with you at the end of the summer term.

Please look out for a curriculum update from your child’s class teacher via Seesaw. This will provide you with more information about your child’s learning this term. Diolch.

Goodbye and Good Luck Mrs Pohl

Today was Mrs Pohl’s last day at Glasllwch before moving on to her new role within Newport Local Authority. Once again, we would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Mrs Pohl for all she has done for our Glasllwch community – you have been amazing! Thank you so much!  We wish Mrs Pohl all the very best for the future.

Welcome Mrs Griffiths

This week Mrs Griffiths has joined our school team as our new School Support Officer. She has worked closely with Mrs Pohl throughout the week to ensure a smooth transition. Mrs Griffiths is delighted to have been appointed and is very much looking forward to becoming part of our Glasllwch Primary School community.

Pirates in the Port

Today we were fortunate to be joined by Shanty Band ‘Bois Y Bryn’ who came into school to run a Shanty workshop with Year 5 and 6. The children thoroughly enjoyed watching Bois Y Bryn performing, as well as learning some shanties themselves. A huge thank you to Stephen Morris, our Vice Chair of Governors, who organised the workshop and the band members who performed. Brilliant fun! Diolch!

Bois Y Bryn will be performing at the City of Newport Shanty & Folk Festival which is taking place across Newport on 31st May and 1st June. Please visit www.shantywales.com for more information.

Reading Books

We are pleased to have had a delivery of new books to support the teaching and learning of reading within school. A big thank you for the PTA and community donations which have funded the purchase of the new reading books.

Welsh Workshops for Y3/4 Parents and Carers

Criw Cymraeg have been busy in school preparing for the Year 3/4 Welsh Workshop taking place on Wednesday next week at 3:30pm in Year 4. The children are doing a brilliant job and are looking forward to supporting Y3/4 parents and carers with developing their Welsh language skills. Please do come along!

PTA Silent Disco

We are looking forward to the PTA Silent Disco on Friday next week at 6:30pm. Please do come along and get involved. School continues to rely on much needed funds raised from the PTA. Thank you!

Warmer Weather

During the warmer weather we encourage the children to wear hats on the yard and to have sun cream on when they come to school. A number of products which only need applying once a day are now available. We discourage the children from bringing sun cream to school to apply themselves, for obvious reasons! If anyone has any specific concerns about this, please don’t hesitate in contacting school to discuss this further.

Also, pleasemake sure the children bring a drink of water to school in a refillable water bottle with a sports cap. No squash/fizzy drinks and no glass bottles please.

Attendance

A HUGE well done to Year 4 for achieving the highest attendance so far this year with 97%, exceeding our 96% target! Also, well done Year 5 who had 97.6% attendance during the Spring Term. Amazing!

Our overall attendance figure this academic year is 95.7% – so close to our target of 96%. We can do it with your support!

We have been delighted to see a reduction in the number of children arriving late in the mornings – fantastic! Thank you for supporting us in this. Doors open for children to filter in from 8.50am. It is vital that all children are in school and in classes by 9am so they are ready to learn.

Mrs J. Munslow
