Year 5 Trip to Big Pit

This week Year 5 visited Big Pit National Coal Museum as part of their enquiry project ‘What was life like for the Victorian coal miners?’.  During the day, the children had an underground tour of the mine, took part in a 'Servants of the Empire' workshop and visited the mining museum. These authentic experiences will enrich the children’s learning. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day! Thank you to all our parent helpers for supporting the visit.

Year 2 Visit to Cardiff Castle

This week Year 2 visited Cardiff Castle as part of their enquiry project ‘Why are there so many castles in Wales?’. The children had a tour of the castle and took part in a workshop, learning all about medieval castles, weapons and armour. They had a fantastic time! We were so pleased to hear that the staff from Cardiff Castle commented on the children’s superb behaviour! Thank you to all our parent helpers for supporting the visit.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day was the 10th of February so in school we have been learning all about remaining safe online. The children have been engaging in a variety of age-appropriate learning activities and assemblies to remind them of the importance of Cyber Safety. These celebrations promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Please support us in continuing this focus at home, taking care to check the security and privacy settings on your child's device. Thank you!

Year 3 Curriculum Celebration

A HUGE well done to Year 3 for their fantastic Curriculum Celebration yesterday with parents/carers. The children took great pride in sharing their learning experiences. They performed ‘A Strata of Society’ and shared their learning from their enquiry project ‘What did the Romans do for us?’. The children enjoyed teaching their families some of the skills they learnt through the project – mosaic creations, J2 Logo coding and Roman Numerals identification. Da iawn and diolch!

Girls Football Tournament

On Wednesday our Year 5/6 Girls Football Team took part in a Football Tournament at NISV, Spytty. During the tournament the girls played 8 games. They played really well and enjoyed developing their football skills.  Da iawn pawb! Thank you to everyone who helped with transport to make this possible.

INSET Day

Today, all staff have engaged in professional learning linked to our School Development Plan priorities. The morning was spent engaging in training provided by the LA School Improvement Service (LASIS) developing the role of Enabling Adults to ensure all practitioners are highly skilled in engaging with children to further their learning, within an effective learning environment.

During the afternoon, all staff took part in Outdoor Learning training provided by the LA Bio-diversity Team. This professional learning will enable all staff to provide further opportunities for children to engage in rich outdoor learning opportunities.

Playground Shelter

We are delighted to confirm that our new playground shelter will be installed the week after half-term! As you will be aware, the PTA have worked tirelessly to raise money to pay for the installation of the shelter. THANK YOU SO MUCH to all the parents, staff, governors and wider community members who have donated and supported the PTA in raising this money. Your generosity is much appreciated. Diolch yn fawr iawn!

Safeguarding

The safety and protection of our children is one of our main aims. Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and procedures are reviewed annually and are published on our school website under 'Online Office'. All staff and governors receive annual update training. Our Safeguarding Governors, Mrs Hyland and Mrs Anthony also receive regular higher-level training.

Our Wellbeing Ambassadors have developed child friendly Safeguarding, Bullying and Anti-racism Policies to support children in this area. These have been shared with all children during whole school assemblies and are displayed on pupil noticeboards throughout school. These can be accessed on our Safeguarding webpage.

Goodbye and Good Luck

Yesterday we said good bye and good luck to Miss Venn, Year 2 Teaching Assistant. Miss Venn is leaving us to take up an alternative career working within the social media industry. This is an exciting opportunity for her and we are sure you will join us in wishing her all the best in her new role. Good luck Miss Venn, we will miss you!

Welcome Miss Parsons

After half-term we welcome Miss Parsons who will be taking up the role of Year 2 Teaching Assistant. Miss Parsons brings great experience and a passion for developing creativity. We look forward to welcoming Miss Parsons to our Glasllwch Team.

World Book Day

This year we will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. We would love to see the children dressed as their favourite book character, bringing the book their character is from into school to share with their peers in the class.

Breakfast Club

As a result of feedback gathered through our parent survey last academic year, we have been consulting with the Local Authority and the Governing Body to explore the possibility of restarting a Breakfast Club provision at Glasllwch Primary School. As a school we are hopeful we can provide a Breakfast Club for the children in order to support our families.

In order to make the Breakfast Club a possibility, we are seeking to recruit a Breakfast Club Supervisor. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, hardworking, caring and reliable individual to join our team here at Glasllwch. This position will be advertised on the Newport City Council website Jobs section. If you are interested in applying for this role, please visit the Newport City website: Current Vacancies
