Nursery Curriculum Celebration
This week the Nursery children held their Curriculum Celebrations. These special events provided an opportunity for the children to showcase some of their learning and to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding, engaging in practical activities with their parent/carer. They shared their learning about all things winter, Big Garden Bird Watch, Wales and the Festivals of Chinese New Year and Holi. It was wonderful to see the children sing and dance with such confidence. With their parent/carer, the children enjoyed weaving and painting daffodils, decorating eggs, counting leeks and decorating snowman biscuits. A huge thank you to all those family members who attended, your ongoing support is appreciated.
Senedd Glasllwch Share with Governors
We were VERY proud of our Learning Squad and Community Committee who presented to our school Governing Body earlier this week. Representatives from these groups shared some of their achievements so far this academic year. Learning Squad have been busy researching the benefits of outdoor learning and consulting with pupils and staff to explore opportunities to increase outdoor learning within school. Our Community Committee have been improving our engagement with the local community, organising intergenerational experiences and raising money for a variety of charities. The children were brilliant! Da iawn pawb!
British Sign Language
On Monday Year 5 and Year 6 children had a fantastic time taking part in a British Sign Language workshop delivered by New Directions. They were excited to learn a new way to communicate, practising signs for everyday words and phrases through fun, interactive activities. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explored this important skill.
STEM Festival at Rodney Parade
To celebrate British Science Week this week, children in Year 4, 5 and 6 took part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Festival at Rodney Parade. During the day the children engaged in a variety of activities including designing technological equipment on Minecraft, experiencing a VR headset, programming, coding, making their own megabits and code breaking. The children also had the opportunity to network with STEM based companies about future job opportunities. Fantastic!
Newport Grand Council
This week two of our Senedd Members took part in Newport’s spring term Grand Council event designed around the UNCRC. During the day the children took part in a number of exciting and informative workshops in which the children could celebrate being Welsh by looking at how we live, eat and learn in Wales. Both Daisy and Ava-Leigh represented Glasllwch brilliantly. Da iawn ti!
Tennis Workshops
On Thursday the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 took part in tennis workshops provided by Newport Live. During the sessions the children enjoyed playing different games to develop their catching, throwing and hitting skills. Da iawn pawb!
Swimming Success
Year 3 have finished their three-week block of intensive swimming lessons. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have progressed well - developing their swimming skills and water confidence. Da iawn pawb! A HUGE thank you to all the parents who have helped out by attending these sessions. Diolch!
PTA Update
Family Bingo
A massive thank you to all those who joined us on Friday night for the PTA Family Bingo. It really was amazing to see the event so well attended; it was a wonderful community event. A big thank you to the PTA for organising such a brilliant evening – it really was a great success! All money raised will be used to fund the installation of another playground shelter which will benefit the children and families here at Glasllwch. Diolch yn fawr iawn!

Smarties Challenge
This week all children were given a tube of smarties to take home. We are encouraging all the children, if you are able, to return the tube filled with coins before the end of term. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Eid-al-Fitr Celebrations
During the next fortnight, the children will be learning all about the importance of Ramadan and why we celebrate Eid al-Fitr. During this time the children will experience a variety of activities designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Islamic faith. On Monday 23rd March we will have a special day of Eid al-Fitr related activities and celebrations so the children are invited to wear special clothes for the day.
Easter Fun Day
Also, over the next two weeks, the children will be learning about why Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar; developing their knowledge and understanding through a variety of activities. On Friday 27th March we will be having an Easter Fun Day! We are asking the children for a £1 donation (via Parent Pay) in exchange for wearing their own clothes for the day and having an Easter Disco in the afternoon. All children will receive an Easter Egg to take home. The children can also design and make a ‘Funky Easter Hat’ to bring into school for our Funky Hat Parade!
Comic Relief – Red Nose Day
We will be celebrating Red Nose Day on Thursday 19th March. To support the charity, the Community Committee has planned comic relief activities. We are encouraging everyone to wear red or something funny (funny socks, a funky hat, etc.) to raise money on the day. The children have taken part in a 'Design a Red Nose' competition which will be judged next week and a joke competition which has been shared for home-learning via Seesaw. Please support this worthy cause by donating via the link sent by email; monies go direct to the Comic Relief charity.
Welsh Phrase of the Week
‘Dim ots’ – ‘It doesn’t matter’
Wellbeing Ambassadors Kindness Challenge
This month our Wellbeing Ambassadors Kindness Challenge is: ‘Tell someone a joke!’. Please join us in spreading kindness by making others laugh.
Safety Outside of the School Gates
Please, please can we remind parents of the importance of not double parking, parking on double yellow lines or parking dangerously to drop children off or pick them up. We continue to have a number of complaints from parents who are HUGELY concerned about the health and safety of the children whilst crossing the roads. This really is a very serious issue. Vehicles parked dangerously will be reported to the police.
Thank you in anticipation of your support.
Upcoming Dates
Diary dates for the week ahead can be found on our home page. Please visit our school calendar to access diary dates for the year ahead. We will continue to add dates to the calendar as we move through the school year.
Reminder: Friday 20th March is our Cluster INSET Day so school will be closed for children.
Yours sincerely,
