Welsh Water

On Monday we welcomed Welsh Water to school. The children enjoyed a whole school assembly and Year 1 & Year 2 took part in Welsh Water workshops. The children learnt about the water cycle and why we must try not to waste water. Diolch Welsh Water.

Royal Welsh Military Museum

This week Year 6 visited the Royal Welsh Military Museum in Brecon to take part in the 'A Child's War' workshop. They were allowed to play with some real artefacts from the war, experience an air raid shelter in the garden of the museum and learn about an evacuee's life in the Welsh countryside. Everyone was really well behaved and learned a lot. Da iawn pawb!

Holocaust Memorial Service

On Tuesday 27th January we took four Year 6 Senedd Members to the Holocaust Memorial Service at Newport Cathedral. It was a very poignant service attended by Headteachers, Councillors, LA Officers and children from across the authority. We were so proud of the four children who attended. Not only was their behaviour exemplary, but they demonstrated an understanding of why we were there and what the service was about. Da iawn pawb!

STEM Workshops

Today, Year 5 and Year 6 have engaged in STEM Wales workshops. During the sessions they have learnt about coding, micro-bits, and space exploration. The children were highly engaged and demonstrated excellent coding skills. Fantastic!

Y Cwricwlwm Cymreig

The week beginning 23rd February will be our designated Welsh Culture and Heritage Week. During this week the children will be engaged in a variety of activities and competitions linked to our Welsh culture and heritage.

Our whole school Eisteddfod, to celebrate St. David’s Day, will be held on Friday 27th February and will be an opportunity for children across the school to celebrate their achievements. On the day of the Eisteddfod the children can come to school wearing Welsh National costume or National costume from their country of origin.

 Home Learning Eisteddfod Competitions:

Each year group has a theme and the children are encouraged to produce one item following that theme. They can either: paint, collage, draw, make a model, sew, cook or write about their theme. The themes for each year group are:

Nursery - Sheep

Reception - Daffodils

Year 1 - Welsh costume

Year 2 - Dragons

Year 3 - Welsh castles

Year 4  - Welsh food

Year 5  - Welsh history and heritage

Year 6  - Welsh art and artists

The entries should be brought into school by Thursday 26th February. Children should invent a nom–de–plume to label their work with.

The school hall will be decorated with all the children's entries ready for the Eisteddfod celebrations. If you would like to view the children's competition entries you are welcome to do so on Friday 27th February at 3:15pm when the school hall will be open to parents/carers.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance for this year so far is 94.5%, this is below our attendance target of 96%.

Our attendance figure for the Spring Term so far is 95.2% - looking much better!

Well done Year 5 for achieving the highest attendance so far this academic year and Year 4 for the highest attendance so far this term.

We can only improve our attendance and achieve our target with your support. Please remember that all holidays should be taken during the school breaks and not in term time. Any planned absence from school must be requested in writing via the office or the school website. Such requests will be considered on an individual basis.

Good attendance at school is vital if your child is to achieve their full potential.  It is important that all children are in school and ready to learn by 9am. The school doors are open from 8.50am for the children to filter into classrooms. The school gates close at 9am so that the teachers can start lessons promptly, as soon as the register has been called. Children arriving late are missing out on valuable learning opportunities.  It is also important that children do not arrive on the yard too early. Please note that supervision starts at 8.50am.

Polite reminder - no ball games are allowed on the yard before or after school.

Thank you for your continued support.

Welsh Phrase of the Week

‘Mae flin ‘da fi.’ – ‘I’m sorry.’

Upcoming Dates

Diary dates for the week ahead can also be found on our home page. Please visit our school calendar to access diary dates for the year ahead. We will continue to add dates to the calendar as we move through the school year.

Enjoy a restful and relaxing weekend.

Mrs J. Munslow
