School News – Friday 13th June ‘25

13 Jun 2025
We are well into the second half of the summer term and the children have been participating in new and exciting authentic contexts for learning. The children are enjoying being involved in developing their own project questions and having a say in what and how they would like to learn. They continue to develop their literacy, numeracy and digital competence skills as well as their subject knowledge across a range of curriculum areas.
Reception Curriculum Celebration
This week we have welcomed families to our Reception Curriculum Celebration. The children were so excited and thoroughly enjoyed sharing some of their learning from throughout this year; they spoke with confidence, sang and danced with enthusiasm, and showcased their learning across all areas of the curriculum. It was a pleasure to see the children sharing their learning and engaging in activities alongside their families. The event really was a celebration of the children’s wonderful achievements and the fantastic progress they have made this year! Da iawn pawb!
NCC Grand Council Meeting
On the 9th June, two of our Senedd Glasllwch members attended NCC’s Grand Council Event at Bassaleg School. During the day, Violet and Holly took part in a Q&A session about Newport Leisure Centre and took part in a session with Newport Live about leadership and volunteering. The girls also engaged with children from schools across Newport to reflect on being a ‘role model’ and learnt about Barnardo’s charity. As always, both children represented Glasllwch brilliantly!
Criw Cymraeg Cluster Sports
Members of our Criw Cymraeg pupil group had a fantastic time taking part in a cluster sports day at Gaer Primary School – they combined physical activity with developing their Welsh language skills! Throughout the morning, the children had the opportunity to communicate in Welsh while taking part in various sporting activities. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they encouraged each other and engaged in friendly competition—all while celebrating the Welsh language in a fun and active way. Da iawn to everyone involved!
STEM Project
Our Year 5 and 6 pupils have been engaging in an exciting STEM project ‘Glas Prix’ as part of our Science & Technology Curriculum — designing and building their very own car! Through hands-on learning, they’ve explored engineering principles, problem-solving techniques, and the mechanics of motion. Their creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm so far has been fantastic. We have been very lucky to have Mr Hyland in school supporting the children with his expertise – thank you Mr Hyland. A huge well done to all involved – future innovators in the making!
John Frost School Sports
Year 4 had a fantastic time at their sports transition morning at The John Frost School. The children embraced the opportunity to experience a variety of activities, while getting a taste of secondary school life. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination as they tackled new skills and enjoyed friendly competition. Fantastic!
Playground Safety
Once again – in the interest of safety, children are not allowed to use the timber trail, run up and down the grass bank, or play ball games before and after school. Your support in encouraging your child to remain on the playground at these times is much appreciated. Thank you!
Welsh Phrase of the Week
‘Beth yw enw dy ffrind?’ – ‘What is the name of your friend?’
