School News Friday 3rd October ‘25

3 Oct 2025
We have had an exciting and busy week in school! These are some of the highlights:
Reception visit to Jews Wood
Today, our Reception class went on an exciting walk to Jews Wood. They had a fantastic time engaging in a variety of outdoor learning activities and discovering more about their local environment. Diolch to all the parents and carers who were able to come along and help make the visit a success—despite the wet weather!
Poetry in the Community
This week, to celebrate National Poetry Day, children from across the school wrote a variety of poems, which were then delivered to local residents by our Year 6 class. We hope the local community enjoyed receiving the poems. Da iawn pawb!
Year 4 Local Area Walk
On Monday, Year 4 took part in a geographical enquiry within the local area, as part of their curriculum project: How will sustainability affect the future of Casnewydd? During their enquiry, they collected data on recycling, electric charging points, solar panels, and bus stops. The children will use this information to continue their project learning back in school.
Harvest Festival
This week, we held our whole-school Harvest Festival. Our Year 6 children led the celebrations, sharing important messages about how food is produced around the world and how we can help provide for others who may be less fortunate than ourselves. All the children enjoyed singing Harvest songs and listening to our visiting speakers. A BIG thank you to Mr Bafico from Trinity Church, and to Adrian and Julie from the Trussell Trust Foodbank.
Also, a HUGE thank you for the generous produce donations sent into school. The food has been given to the Trussell Trust Foodbank—a charity that provides emergency food and support to local people experiencing poverty. They have seen an increase in demand due to the cost-of-living crisis, so your donations will help many people in need. Thank you, everyone!
Black History Month
This morning, the whole school took part in an online assembly to mark the beginning of Black History Month, led by Swarzy Macaly, BBC Radio Broadcaster and Journalist. Over the coming weeks, children will be learning about the rich and diverse history, culture, and contributions of Black individuals and communities.
PTA Update
On Tuesday, we held our PTA AGM. During the meeting, we reflected on the successes of last year—lots of fantastic events that raised an incredible £6,596.65! This money supported the purchase of classroom resources, new reading books for our younger learners, our T2P messaging service, Year 6 bowling, and much more.
This academic year, the PTA has agreed to support improvements in Science & Technology equipment, contributing to the purchase of coding tools and construction blocks for pupils across the school. They will also support enhancements to outdoor learning by funding much-needed equipment.
Thank you so much to everyone involved—we couldn’t do it without you!
At the AGM, we also finalised the new committee member roles for 2025/26. We’re pleased to confirm the following positions:
Chair: Mandy Burgess
Vice Chair: Lindsey Dacey
Secretary: Bethan Turner
Treasurer: Cristyn Edwards
A huge thank you to our committee members for taking on these important roles, and to everyone who attended the meeting. We look forward to an exciting year ahead! Also, a BIG thank you to Sandra Durant who has stepped down from the PTA Committee – thank you Mrs Durant for all your time and effort over a number of years!
Please visit our PTA webpage to find out how you can support Glasllwch PTA.
Hall Windows Installation
Next week, Newport City Council contractors will begin installing our new hall windows. It is anticipated that the installation will be completed by October half-term. During this time, we will be unable to use the school hall, so school dinners will be eaten in classrooms and PE activities will take place outside, weather permitting.
For health and safety reasons, Year 3 and Year 4 children will need to enter the school via the side gate (next to the Nursery building). At the end of the day, children will be escorted onto the yard for dismissal as usual. Thank you for your support and co-operation.
Upcoming Events
Please visit our school calendar to access diary dates for the year ahead. We will continue to add dates to the calendar as we move through the school year. Please note – upcoming dates for the week ahead can also be found on our home page.
